ELADES Professor Publishes Academic Article on the Concept of Human Development

A recent academic contribution has been made by Felipe Correa, professor and coordinator at ELADES, and disseminated in The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics published by Springer. The article, titled “Human Development,” examines the concept of human development from a multidimensional perspective, addressing its historical, theoretical, and practical evolution.
The concept of human development has been widely discussed over the past century as a way to refer to the development of people. From its earliest definitions, this concept has evolved significantly, especially under the influence of international organizations such as the United Nations. These institutions broadened the notion of economic development, considering the economy not as an ultimate goal but as a means to advance human development.
In this context, the academic article offers an overview of the various understandings of the concept, from its initial definitions to its current interpretation, characterized by a holistic approach encompassing all dimensions of integral development.
However, the study not only addresses the most contemporary definitions but also underscores the relevance of Aristotelian philosophy for understanding this concept. The article reflects on how ethical virtues—such as generosity, justice, and moderation—emerge as decisive elements in people’s happiness and well-being.
These new insights demonstrate that human development can be a dynamic concept, capable of adapting to and responding to the needs of each era. In Correa’s words, this article “provides a synthesis to give greater depth to the work carried out by those involved in countries’ development practice.”
We invite students, professors, and researchers to explore this work and to continue contributing to the enrichment of discussions on the various dimensions of integral human development.
